Frequently asked questions about counselling
If you are exploring counselling for the first time, it can help to know what to expect. These questions cover first sessions, the counselling relationship, and the kind of support I offer across Bloubergstrand, Table View, Melkbosstrand, Parklands, Sunningdale, Flamingo Vlei, and nearby areas, as well as online. If you would like more detail, you can also explore my services, read more about my approach, or get in touch.
What to expect when we meet for the first time
The first session is usually “for me” - it’s my opportunity to get to know you so that the rest of the counselling process can be all about you. During this session, I will explain how counselling works, answer any questions or uncertainties you may have, and take care of some administrative details. I’ll also ask a few questions to better understand your experiences, needs, and goals, so I can walk alongside you in the most helpful and supportive way possible.
What is a registered counsellor?
A registered counsellor is a trained professional who provides support, guidance, and strategies to help you cope with life’s challenges, explore your emotions, and build resilience. We focus on understanding your experiences, context, and goals, and work collaboratively to help you feel more grounded and connected. Registered counsellors are recognised by professional bodies and follow ethical standards to ensure your safety, privacy, and wellbeing.
How is a registered counsellor different from a psychologist?
Psychologists also work with mental health, often including assessment and diagnosis of psychological conditions. Counsellors focus on relational, exploratory, and practical support, centred around a person’s experiences and context. If a counsellor feels that a client would benefit from additional support, they may refer them to a psychologist or other healthcare professional to ensure the client’s needs are fully met.
How long does counselling usually last?
The length of counselling varies depending on your needs, goals, and the challenges you’re working with. Some people find a few sessions helpful, while others benefit from longer-term support. Together, we will review progress as we go and adjust the pace and frequency of sessions to suit you.
What can I do if I don’t feel a connection with my counsellor?
It’s natural to wonder about this, and feeling comfortable with your counsellor is important. If you ever feel that the relationship isn’t right, we can discuss it openly and explore ways to make it work, or consider whether another approach or support might be a better fit for you. The goal is always for you to feel safe, understood, and supported.
